¨I will give them an undivided heart and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of Stone and give them a heart of flesh. Then they will follow My decrees and be careful to keep My laws. They will be My people, and I will be their God.¨ Ezekiel 11:19-20
Dear family and friends,
We have had a good start to the new year, and hope you have as well! We have been in Mexico for a little over a year now. Looking back over the past year, it has been adventurous and exciting to see how our children have grown, as well as Vision Jesus in Mexico. We will share both areas of growth in the following update.

As for our family…
We will give further information about our daily, weekly, and upcoming activities later in this letter, but first, here is an update on our kids:
Abram has been doing great and continues to ´roll around´ during tummy time. He is now drinking full-time from a bottle instead of being tube fed!
Ian now writes his name, thanks to his diligence and also to having a short name. He is our little ´English man´…he says everything with an English accent. His questions begin and end with the word why. ¨Why did Papi cut his hair, why?¨ He stays preoccupied trying to make sure his brother Adal is doing everything ´right´, just like he doesJ. He wants to be just like his Papi and often goes to the bathroom to wet and style his hair, as if the water were gel, because he sees his Papi putting something like that in his hair every morning. He then looks in satisfaction in the mirror.
Adal is Mr. Left-handed! (Did we mention this last time? Forgive me if we have already.) We are just still surprised we have a left-handed child in the family. We know he´ll do great, though, because we have several very intelligent, gifted left-handed friendsJ Not sure where he heard it, but he doesn´t like to say ¨no¨ but rather ¨nope¨. He is not a man of many words, but when we pray at night, all his words come out. That´s comforting to us…may he always pour out his heart more to God than to other people.
Noelani is our girly girl. Everything needs to be pink. If I give her pants to wear or her pajamas, she always puts her little frilly white princess skirt on top. Her curls bounce around as she chatters in her sweet high-pitched voice.
Nadia walks with a confident spring in her step and a unconquerable smile. Several times she has woken me up in the middle of the night to give me a kiss and say: ¨Mamita, I love you.¨ Then, she goes back to bed. She also is writing her name.
And, sweet, keep-it-all-in-order Andrea…compassionately sensitive to others´ needs. She is doing well being homeschooled in kindergarten and beginning to get the hang of reading. As we all know, kids have the cutest sayings. Here are some of hers:
When we were travelling from the Carolinas to Mexico last year, passing through Louisianna, she saw all the cars behind us and said: ¨Papi and Mami, look! Everyone is following us to Mexico!¨
-Her grandmother gave her a book for Christmas Guess How Much I Love You in which it ends with ¨I love you all the way to the moon¨. One day when she had squabbled with her sister, I told her to give her sister a hug and tell her that she loved her. She said, ¨Okay, but I only love her to the sun¨. I laughed and told her that was great, because that meant she loved her even more! (We used this as a time of education where we researched the moon and sun.)
-When she wants to know something, she says, ¨Tell me ALL about it!¨
-She has heard us praise God saying, ¨God, you receive all the glory.¨ However, she prays, ¨God, you are glory!¨

Vision Jesus in Mexico….
It fills our heart with joy to see people becoming more established in their faith as they come to understand the abounding grace of God. How beautiful it is when a person comes to obey and follow the Lord out of pure love and whole-hearted gratitude to Him!
Here in Mexico City, there is a strong division of religions; for example, the one that exists between Christians and Catholics. It seems many adapt an ideology that people will change if you point out their ´sinful´ ways. With this belief, when a person accepts Jesus as Lord and Savior, he has to be told everything he should and shouldn´t do in order to please God. Most people here, even those who practice a religion called ´holy death´ (though there´s nothing ´holy´ about it), say they believe, or at least respect God and His Word, the Bible. When we talk to someone about living for God, we suggest that he read the Bible for himself to find out what he should believe and how he should live, and to ask God to show Himself real in his life. We cannot force someone to believe and much less insist that a person change, but we can love that person. Jesus said that He did not come to ¨condemn the world, but to save the world¨, and that His Spirit ¨will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment¨ and ¨will guide you in all truth¨ (John 3:17, 16:8, 13). Our mission is to show God´s love and proclaim the good news of the forgiveness of sins, salvation, and abundant life we can receive through Jesus Christ so that those who believe in Him as Lord and Savior will whole-heartedly ´fall-in-love´ with Him. If you truly love someone, is there anything you wouldn´t do for that person you adore? That is when our faith becomes absolutely beautiful: when we follow and obey the Lord—out of love and gratitude guided by His Spirit. Many years ago, our Pastor Mauricio told us something that greatly impacted our lives: ¨Our obedience satisfies the Lord, but our relationship with Him is what brings Him pleasure.¨ The goal is to teach people to have a personal daily relationship with God through reading His Word and in prayer; when their relationship with God is restored, His Spirit will convict them of how they should live.
We would like to share a powerful story of God guiding and convicting a person by His Holy Spirit, instead of being influenced without conviction by others telling her what she must and mustn´t do. There is a dear single mother in our congregation who has been a Christian for a little over a year. She comes from a catholic background, as most do, although that doesn´t mean much because very few are truly dedicated to Catholicism; rather it means following a few rituals during a lifetime and having such identity. Her small one-room house had some pictures of the saints common in Catholicism, which people are erroneously taught to pray to instead of praying to Father God as the Bible instructs. Most people have heard some time or another that the Bible clearly tells us that we shouldn´t have idols in our life. I do not think it refers to an object (although it could be) as much as something or someone that we adore more than God. We can all regularly examine our lives in this matter, as idols often subtly arise in our hearts. Back to the story…it is obvious that this young woman has a sincere love for God and has given more ´good fruit´ in one year than many do in a lifetime. She delights in reading God´s Word and does so daily; she is full of love and joy and continuously shares with others what God has done in her life; she despises having an enemy and often gives something nice to a person who doesn´t like her; she is also one of our most faithful attendants at church. You might say that she has always been a good person, but that is contrary to what her family tells us. She comes from a very difficult background and used to be filled with anger and bitterness, without hope in life. After considering the situation, we decided not to mention to her anything about the pictures of saints in her house—although there were people who told us we should do so; nor did we comment about any other minor thing that may not be correct (according to the Bible). She possesses what is most important: love for God with all her heart, mind, and soul and love for others, even for enemies. We prayed for her and asked God´s Spirit to guide her in what is right and wrong. We knew she was reading the Bible, her most important instructional book for life. About two weeks ago, she came to visit us and brought us some food, as she often does. As we were talking—actually about always keeping God as our first love—she said, ¨Guess what? I just threw away the pictures of saints and all the secular music I had.¨ May I reiterate that we never said a word to her about this. She did what she did out of love for God, because she wants to honor and obey Him. This is just one of the several stories we have already seen in which God guides His children by His Spirit and they obey out of love, instead of someone having to dictate their lives. Once again: when we are in love, there is nothing we won´t do to make that person happy. When that relationship is with our Creator, there is nothing that can separate us from His love!
Regarding our weekly schedule, we continue having our celebration service on Sunday afternoons, Bible study/prayer on Tuesday nights, and alternating leadership class with ladies´ meeting on Thursday nights. The youth meet together on Saturday afternoons, and they hope to soon begin a music class. We also have begun English classes, a result of many people asking us to teach them English. Beginning February 16, we now hold a class every Wednesday evening. We have had a big turnout without even publicizing it. And, although the class was initiated to focus on teaching children, the group composition consists of toddlers to grandparents. During the class, while evidently we teach how to speak English, the students also learn children songs that praise the Lord and a Bible story, both which focus on the grammar learned that particular day. We are also tutoring a college student in English on Monday mornings. It has been extra work yet so much fun and rewarding to see people excited to learn!
The weekend of March 12-14, we will be having a seminar Three days of Grace. We have the wonderful privilege of having our Pastor Mauricio Mercado (Hendersonville, NC) come to teach and minister to the people, and David Kahl (Joy´s brother also coming from Hendersonville, NC) will also be with us to lead and minister in praise and worship. David will be staying with us for the remainder of the week; we will enjoy his company and, without a doubt, he will be an encouragement to the people. Please be praying for this special occasion. We believe it will be a very impacting event! Baptisms are tentatively planned for March 12, before the seminar begins.
Good report regarding legal status…I (Joy) was just granted residency here in Mexico so that I do not have to return to the United States every six months; although I would like to return to see everyone, it is not fun to separate as a family and it is quite expensive to do twice a year. We do pray, though, to one day be able to return or visit—whichever the Lord desires—together as a family to the dear country we left and be reunited with family and friends once again.
We hope each and everyone of you have had a fulfilling start to this year. As always, with all our heart, we thank you for your prayers, support, and encouragement! We love and miss you, our friends and family.
